Cookie

Cookie is our first "child," although she is not our oldest! She is a little "foundling," whom we adopted straight from the yard of Christopher's sister Melissa. The little puppy was living under Melissa's house, and Molly the ferocious cat would not permit her to come in! Since we did not yet have any "children," we agreed to take her in. We named her Cookie, because food names seemed to be the trend at the time (cousins, Koko and Meringue) AND we knew we would eventually have a dog named Sugar (that story found below). We adopted Cookie early in 1996, the year after we got married. We estimate that Cookie will be turning seven in December of 2002.

Not unlike Molly the cat, Cookie was quite perky herself and had to attend obedience school before we were able to fully appreciate her cute-ness. Even today, she is a strong personality. We figure this has something to do with her Chow heritage. Even though her "in-your-face" approach can be intimidating to non-dog people, Cookie is really just a big lap dog at heart. Just don't try to give her a bath, and you will be okay! In fact, she would love for you to pull on her fur when you are petting her. She is a self-grooming dog, in that her thick undercoat continually falls out in big clumps throughout the entire summer. Although Cookie is a red dog on the outside, her undercoat is very light in color, so most people blame the shedding on Sugar. That's the way (uh huh, uh huh) she likes it! Cookie enjoys napping and eating (of course), pestering her doggy and human family members, and chasing any smaller animal that might wander into the backyard.

Sugar

Sugar is appropriately-named, because she is a really sweet dog. She is a white Eskimo mix, with ears that flop down instead of sticking up! We have known her since she was born in March of 1994, next door to Deena's mom's old house on 27th street. Her birth mother, Shasta, looked like an Eskimo, and her birth father was brown dog named Scout. Scout was also appropriately- named, because he enjoyed roaming the neighborhood and visiting his girlfriend Shasta! Deena was in college at the time, about to be engaged to Christopher. We all thought the puppies were adorable, so Deena's mom Linda picked out her favorite to be a companion to her and her little dog Baby. "Sugar" was the obvious choice for a name for the tiny little ball of fur.

Linda thought Sugar would be her dog forever, but life often takes unexpected turns. In 1996, she began dating, became engaged to and married a United Methodist minister and old friend, Nicky. She was concerned about their four pets (three dogs and a cat) living together in harmony and not destroying the parsonage, so we agreed to adopt Sugar as our own after the wedding in July. Cookie and Sugar got along fairly well, especially since Sugar was used to not being the "head dog" anyway. The two "fur girls" have been sisters ever since!

Sugar enjoys people, but she would rather be sitting at our feet than in our laps. Don't even bother trying to pick her up, because she is too big and round! Her favorite things to do are eat (as much as possible) and be rubbed by someone's feet! Her third favorite activity is napping, which occupies most of her time. Her long white fur unfortunately shows dirt well, but she looks adorable when she is freshly-groomed!
