Comments from Mommy(Written October 2003 / Archived October 2004) I have been staying pretty busy lately. I won't list everything, but feel free to email me for an update. I did want to mention a few things I have been working on lately, though. First of all, I am still dancing a lot. Message In Movement had one presentation last month, but other than that have been taking it pretty easy. I am hoping to get regular rehearsals started back up this week. Colleen (from Message In Movement) and I also lead Footprints, the liturgical dance and movement group at New Haven United Methodist Church. Speaking of New Haven, I am quite involved there as well. Aside from being in the choir and doing a little work with the children, my mother and I have started a Friday morning women's Bible Study. It is going quite well, as we have eleven attending members and three others who are reading the book with us. If you are interested in attending, please contact me. You do not need to be a member of New Haven or a United Methodist to participate. All are welcome!! Besides liturgical dance, I also take tap and ballet lessons, and I teach tap, ballet and jazz at Miss Micki's School of Dance. Right now I am trying to make a go of my adult beginners' tap class, so I am looking for people in the Tulsa area who are interested in taking tap lessons. For more information, click here. Besides that class, I also help with Kyler's class, which is tap/ballet/tumbling for 3-5 year-olds; tap for 5-8 year-olds; tap and ballet for 4th-5th graders and tap/jazz for middle school kids. I have a lot of fun teaching! :) One thing I'm avoiding right now is painting the cabinets in our upstairs bathroom. We are trying to get that project finished, which includes just about everything that can be done to a bathroom! Slowly but surely, we are making progress. I am still very glad to have Christopher home. I will never take him for granted, not that I ever did before. We are having a great time together and as a family, whenever we can spend time together. We take every chance we get! Last weekend we rode the train from Van Buren to Winslow, which was a good time. In case you didn't know, Kyler LOVES trains!! I will put more about that on his page. I hope you are enjoying our website. We do our best to keep it updated. Let us know if you have comments or suggestions. God Bless! Deena :) Comments from Mommy (Archived 10/20/03 | Written 6/20/03) Hello, everyone! Sorry it has taken me so VERY long to get this website updated. I actually know how to do it now, but I have just not had the time until lately. You will understand why when I give you an update on our lives. Since last time I wrote in August, Christopher signed a contract to work 180 days in India for North American Interconnect as a telecom consultant. We got an offer we couldn't refuse, and soon after we sent him off. As you will see in some of the pictures, he was home for two weeks at Christmas, but besides that he was gone from October 7th until May 25th. We made it though, and now he is busy doing work around the house and exploring some career possibilities. Our goal is to stay in Tulsa and to not have to endure any more absences from each other for extended periods of time. I think we are stubborn enough to make it happen. Besides my normal mommy duties and filling in as Daddy, I kept myself very busy in Christopher's absence. Right before he accepted the job in India, I was asked to teach a few dance classes at Miss Micki's School of Dance, which is located near our house. The classes fit into my schedule, so I agreed. The idea was that it would bring in some extra money and allow me to do something I have missed doing for awhile. Luckily family members stepped in to help take care of Kyler so that I could fulfill this commitment. I also continued taking my ballet and tap classes each week and rehearsing with Message In Movement, again with the help and support of friends and family. I was also able to keep up my church activities, including choir and leading liturgical dance classes. The month of April included Message in Movement's 3rd Annual Dance Concert on the 4th and Miss Micki's Recital (her 25th, my 1st) on the 23rd. Two days later, Kyler and I greeted Christopher at the airport--this time for good! Now that Christopher is home, we are enjoying spending time together. We are having a busy summer so far. Kyler is almost finished with New Haven Day School's short-but-sweet summer session, and then he will have a couple of weeks off before Vacation Bible School (He gets to go, because Mom and Dad are leaders) and swimming lessons. I have started teaching toddlers to threes at Riverfield Country Day School on Mondays and Fridays from 3:00 to 5:30, just through the summer, since I was asked when I went to sign up to be a substitute. I will also be teaching one dance class from now through sometime in July, and I am looking to resume rehearsals for Message In Movement. On our 8th anniversary, July 15th, Christopher and I are planning to take an overnight trip to OKC to go to the Dave Matthews Band concert. Then on August 1st the three of us will leave on our Chicago trip--just 13 months after when we were supposed to go. Better late than never! Hopefully we will have some down time after our trip, before Kyler starts school again. My mom and I have been attending a women's Bible study at First United Methodist Church in Broken Arrow, and our plan is to start a similar group at our church that will meet while Day School is in session in the fall. Who knows where else the fall will lead us. I will do my best to keep you updated here. Comments from Mommy (Archived 6/20/03 | Written 8/11/02)First of all, we didn't get to go on our trip to Chicago. (Sorry, Diana and Stefani. We miss you!) Things were happening with Christopher's job, and as a result he will be changing jobs soon in order to stay in Tulsa. We didn't want to go on vacation right in the middle of everything, especially when we were uncertain about our future financial situation. We are not out of the dark yet, but Christopher is looking into various opportunities. We will let you know what becomes of all of this. I'm sure it will all work out for the best. As far as Chicago goes, we are hoping to visit next summer if not before. Since Kyler has been out of Day School, most of my time has centered around him and just being "Mama." I have also been able to spend some time working at the Powerhouse office as Kyler naps or spends time at Grandma's house. Besides mall-walking with Grandma, we've been pretty busy this summer doing a variety of activities. Kyler completed the summer reading program in just four weeks. He would have done it earlier, but we had to visit the library four times. He had 30 books read to him in just two weeks, but we stopped counting after that! We have continued going to the library at least once a week, where Kyler checks out many a book! I'm glad he shares my love for Children's Literature--at least for now, anyway! Hopefully HE will prefer deeper content someday!! Christopher and I worked at Vacation Bible School this year as the opening and closing leaders. We had fun leading songs and introducing/summing up the theme of the day. Kyler got to stay in the nursery each evening, which he absolutely LOVED! He could tell it was more than just regular church or school. He even called it "Vacation Bible School," or "Bug Safari," which was the theme of the energetic week. The church was wonderful to include him and the other toddlers in many of the activities the "big kids" did, and Kyler already is asking if he can do "Vacation Bible School" again when he is three! I guess that means we're on the hook to volunteer again next year! Speaking of next year, Kyler also still talks about his swimming lessons for two weeks at Jane Whit Swim School. He says he is going to do that again when he is three, too! I think that was a great way to get him used to the water. We rewarded his efforts by buying a small pool for our backyard. I'll see if I can find some pictures to post to the site soon. Message In Movement is moving right along! Right now I am especially excited about our workshop at New Haven. Just today we decided to make it an ongoing class, as opposed to the usual short-term workshops throughout the year. I am really excited about the possibilities this change will bring about, including less "deadlines" to worry about, as we work towards various presentations in worship. It is especially exciting to see different age groups (age 5 through adult) working together in cooperation. Even boys are starting to join in the fun!! Happy Birthday wishes go out this month to my one and only sweetheart and husband, Christopher. Unfortunately, he will still be one digit younger than me, but that's okay, because everyone still thinks I am the younger one! Besides, doesn't that mean I have the upper hand?! By the way, can you believe that we have now been together for almost ten years and married over seven years? We just celebrated our anniversary last month. Time flies when you're having fun!! Please be sure to sign our guestbook before you leave our site! I hope you are enjoying your visit. God bless you and yours!! Deena :) Comments from Mommy (Archived 8/10/02 | Written 6/20/02)Things have changed quite a bit since I last wrote. At the beginning of this year I officially became a full-time mom! Since then I have been trying to figure out why I am still so busy! Kyler and I have been spending a lot of time at home, but we have been going places too. We go walking twice a week with "Grandma B" (my mom, Linda), and we have been getting involved in a variety of activities, like swimming lessons and the library summer reading program. Kyler doesn't have Day School this summer, so I have been trying to think of learning activities in which to get him involved. He was going to take a music class this summer, but it got cancelled. I'm trying to decide if I should enroll him in another one. Even though I am no longer full-time at Powerhouse, Kyler and I try to help out a couple of days a week. Kyler helps by napping in the studio while I answer phones and do work. Bryan and Kendra have also been keeping Christopher and me busy DJing parties on the weekend. We are in high demand! We are actually looking forward to working a friend's reception together on July 20th, since we haven't worked together in awhile. Our family stays pretty on week nights, too. Christopher has been playing softball with his office and on the church team whenever possible (church games are on Saturday nights). I am busy dancing, as usual, but only one night a week right now in addition to my Saturday morning tap class. The evening class is pas de deux ballet, which is different and fun! I also have church choir practice on Wednesday nights. Christopher usually practices handbells right before choir practice, but the bell choir takes the summer off. When we have time, we all like to do something together. For instance, we recently took Kyler to the movies and bowling for the first time! Besides playing with Kyler, I have been spending my spare time learning how to update webpages! I just finished updating Message In Movement's webpage, so I thought it was high time I did something with this one! Speaking of Message In Movement, we just had our 2nd Annual "Dance Celebration" Concert on Sunday, June 9th, which involved a lot of planning and rehearsals. After overcoming some obstacles with the location arrangement, the concert went over great! I am hoping we will be able to publicize more next year so that we will have a better turnout. We are taking a short break before resuming rehearsals, but we are just about ready to start again! I am trying to find email addresses of church leaders so that I can get the word out about the group. We plan to have another dance workshop soon at New Haven, and we would like to do some dancing of our own as well. I will try to keep you posted on what we are doing, either here or on the Message In Movement site. Our family has done a lot of celebrating since I last wrote. Kyler, of course, celebrated his 2nd birthday in March. Be sure to check out his birthday pictures! I also had a birthday this month, and even though I'm getting older, a lot of people still claim to be my age! Next month Christopher and I will celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary, and then Christopher gets to advance one digit in August. We are also planning a family vacation to see my friend Diana and step-sister (Aunt) Stefani during the week of July 4th, so we will be sure and post pictures when we return. Comments from Mommy (Archived on 06/20/02 | Written May, 2001)Well, it's busy as usual around the Smith
household. Kyler keeps us busy, of course, but we also stay busy with our jobs. I
have been mostly running the Powerhouse office, since Bryan has been
quite
busy at the recording studio lately, and I also occasionally do DJ gigs
on
the weekends. Especially now that the wedding season is in full swing, it's
never a dull moment at Powerhouse! Kyler is still coming to the office
with
me, but we have lots of help from his Grandma and lovely babysitter
Jennica. He really
likes coming with me, which is great! I do plan to take him to day
school for two days a week in the fall, and Jennica will go to college,
so things will be
changing.
I have also been working on getting my new
dance group, Message in Movement,
off the ground. We have been working on a big program for June 3rd and
are
rehearsing fairly often. We are also planning to create a patriotic
dance
for the 4th of July. You can read about Message in Movement at our new
website, http://www.messageinmovement.com.
I will post pictures at some point after the
program. Christopher and I are also quite involved
in our church, New Haven United
Methodist. I am in the choir, and I am also the chair of the worship
committee. I plan to start a liturgical dance class soon for some of the
kids at the church, which is
something I have wanted to do for a long time. You can find out more about our church at http://www.newhavenumc.org.
Besides all of that, I am trying
to keep up with three dance classes a week. Whew! Kyler, as you will read on his page, is really
growing up fast! He is such a sweetie, and he
is really starting to hug and kiss now. He is also a very good
boy. He is learning how to put things where they "go," like his milk
cup on his tray (instead of on the floor!) and his toys
when he is finished playing. He is also very verbal.
Besides saying a lot of individual words, he also
pretends like he is talking. The cutest time is when he talks himself
to sleep! We are having a great time with him!! That's about all I have for now. Now that this is
FINALLY updated, I feel much
better! Hopefully we'll do it again before another six months flies by. Comments from Mommy (Archived on 5/29/01)Well, I'm finally inspired to write something! Christopher has been on my back to update my page, but I haven't known what to say until now. I was especially concerned that my page just wouldn't measure up to his, since he is so funny! For those of you who don't know, we courted each other through snail mail back in 1993. I thoroughly enjoy reading his writings. If you haven't already read his page, you don't know what you're missing! It's almost Christmas, and things are starting to slow down a bit. It's ABOUT TIME!! Powerhouse is through with most all of our holiday parties. It's difficult to keep track with all of the last-minute bookings, but I think we ended up with about 70 parties in December. Whew!! We had three weekends in a row that were REALLY crazy, but we all survived, as usual. I have also done quite a bit of dancing at my church lately, along with other members of the new liturgical dance troupe, Message in Movement. We are taking a well-needed break before recruiting more dancers and starting rehearsals for our Easter concert. I am really excited about the future of this group, and I pray that everything will go as planned. I will keep you updated as to the group's progress. We are looking for interested dancers and churches. Please send an email if you would like more information about Message in Movement. A website is in the works, but for now I will include some pictures on this page. (These are of us at New Haven rehearsing our interpretation of "The Creation" from the book God's Trombones.) These are the only pictures we have, because our others got lost somewhere in computer land. Thanks to Jean Roberts for providing us with these pictures. (Her granddaughter Jennifer is the youngest dancer pictured.) This wouldn't be Mommy's page without a little bit of bragging about Kyler the smithbaby! You'll have to humor me now, but I just want to say that Christopher and I are so lucky to have such a wonderful little boy! Santa Claus really has his work cut out for him! Kyler and I had a day off work to finish Christmas shopping, and he could not have been a better helper. We basically spent all afternoon going here, there and everywhere, and Kyler didn't even complain one time! He is really growing up quickly, both physically and mentally. He will be walking and talking in no time. You can read more about Kyler on his page. It's hard to believe 2000 has gone by so quickly. I hope everyone has (or had, depending upon when you're reading this) a wonderful holiday season!! God bless you all! Comments from Mommy (Archived on 12/23/00)Whew! 2000 has been an interesting year so far! If you haven't already read my birth story, you should check it out (unless you're pregnant or . Kyler was born on March 22, 2000, weiging a "whopping" 9 pounds, 6.4 ounces! He has been gaining at a rate of about 2 pounds per month. One of my famous quotes now is, "Mommy didn't ask for the biggie size baby!" I really do feel like I was given a bonus with Kyler, even though my muscles aren't keeping up with his growth!! He is such a good baby! Christopher and I and the dogs are having great fun with him. Read more about him on his page. My latest news is the formation of a new dance troupe, "Message in Movement." We dance at churches around the area. I got some dancers together to dance at East Cross United Methodist Church in Bartlesville on July 30th, and we are sticking together! We already have plans to present our dances at a Claremore church in September. I hope to have a website soon or at least have some pictures posted here. If you would like a unique worship experience at your church, send me an email for more details. Doggy Talk | Photo Gallery | The Archives Other Links | Guest Book | Contact Us |
